About SafeRunway360

SafeRunway360 is an open source project built by pilots and engineers who believe that runway safety and situational awareness shouldn't be locked behind paywalls. We've seen how easily "just one more distraction" can creep into the cockpit – and we wanted to build something that actually reduces workload instead of adding to it. That's why we made it free and open source for everyone.

Our mission is simple: help you make better decisions before wheels roll. That means:

  • • Combining EFB tools, runway intelligence, and tracking in one clean experience.
  • • Designing for student pilots, GA aviators, and small operators first—not just airlines.
  • • Giving schools and operators real data they can use for safety meetings and training.
  • • Keeping it open source so the community can contribute and improve it together.

We're constantly iterating with feedback from instructors, students, and safety teams. Contribute on GitHub or contact us if you'd like to shape the next version.

What we care about

  • Safety first. Tools should prevent incidents, not create distraction or confusion.
  • Human-centered design. Built for real-world cockpits, not just pretty screenshots.
  • Privacy & trust. Your flight data is yours. We keep it secure and in your control.

Pilot School / Training Operations / Dispatch Technical / App
Pilot Is SafeRunway360 meant to replace my current EFB?

SafeRunway360 is designed to work alongside tools you already use. Our focus is runway awareness, risk, and tracking. For many GA pilots and schools it can cover core EFB needs, but you should always follow your local regulations and company SOPs when deciding what counts as a primary or approved source.

Pilot Can I use SafeRunway360 on IFR flights?

Many pilots use SafeRunway360 as a situational awareness aid on IFR flights: runway intelligence, crosswind components, and tracking for dispatch or family. It’s not intended to replace certified navigation equipment or required IFR products—always comply with your authority’s guidance and your own SOPs.

Pilot Does SafeRunway360 replace official weather briefings or NOTAM checks?

No. SafeRunway360 is built to supplement your decision making, not replace legally accepted briefing tools. Always use approved sources for official weather, NOTAMs, and briefings, and treat SafeRunway360 as an additional layer of awareness.

Pilot Will the app still work if I lose cell coverage mid-flight?

Yes—your core EFB tools (checklists, weight & balance, saved aircraft profiles) are designed to work offline. Live tracking and real-time runway/traffic information require a data connection; if signal drops, the app queues and resumes data once the connection returns.

Tech What devices and platforms are supported?

SafeRunway360 is designed for modern tablets and phones commonly used in cockpits. Our initial focus is on recent iOS and Android versions, with layouts that adapt to both small phone screens and larger tablets typically mounted on yokes or side rails. It also works Windows, MacOS, Linux Mint, POP! OS, Debian, and Ubuntu operating systems as well.

Pilot How accurate is the position and altitude on the live map?

Live positions are based on your device’s GPS and sensors. In most cases this is accurate enough for tracking and awareness, but it’s not a certified navigation source and should never replace primary flight instruments or certified avionics.

Pilot Can I share a live tracking link with friends and family?

Yes. You can generate time-limited tracking links so friends, family, or customers can see basic flight progress. You control what’s shared and for how long, and you can revoke links whenever you like.

Pilot What happens if my tablet battery dies or the app crashes?

If the device or app stops, tracking and live updates will pause as well. We design for stability and low resource usage, but you should always have appropriate backups and follow your normal procedures. When the app restarts with a connection, live updates resume.

School Can instructors watch student flights in real time?

Yes. With tracking enabled, instructors and dispatch can view live positions, status, and ETA for each flight from a web dashboard. This helps with training oversight, safety, and coordinating pattern traffic at busy times.

School How do flight schools manage multiple aircraft and students?

Schools can create aircraft profiles, assign pilots and instructors, and view a combined fleet dashboard. Each aircraft’s status (scheduled, taxi, airborne, overdue) is visible at a glance so you can manage flow and utilization.

School Can we standardize checklists and risk assessment across the school?

That’s the goal. You can define shared checklists, runway risk thresholds, and standard flows so that every instructor and student is working from the same playbook instead of scattered spreadsheets and PDFs.

School Can we export flights or alerts for training records and debriefs?

Exporting flight summaries and alert history is a key feature for schools. You can review trends (like late go/no-go decisions or frequent crosswind alerts) and bring real data to safety meetings and student debriefs.

School Is SafeRunway360 really free? What about support?

Yes, SafeRunway360 is completely free and open source. All features are available at no cost. We offer optional support plans for teams that need priority assistance, training, or custom integrations. The software itself has no pricing tiers or limitations.

Ops How does the dispatch / ops dashboard actually work?

The dashboard shows all active flights, aircraft, and bases in one view. Ops staff can see who’s taxiing, airborne, overdue, or back on the ramp, along with runway risk and recent alerts for each flight.

Ops Can we get alerts for overdue flights or diversions?

Yes. You can configure overdue thresholds (such as “more than X minutes past ETA”) and receive alerts via dashboard, email, or SMS depending on your setup. Diversion alerts are also possible when a flight deviates significantly from the expected route or destination.

Ops We have multiple bases—can SafeRunway360 handle that?

Multi-base operations are a core use case. You can group aircraft, pilots, and dispatch staff by base, then filter the dashboard so each team sees only what’s relevant to them while leadership maintains a fleet-wide view.

Ops Is SafeRunway360 “approved” by aviation regulators or authorities?

Formal approval/acceptance of EFB tools is handled by your regulator and company. SafeRunway360 is built with stability and data integrity in mind, but you’ll need to work with your chief pilot, training department, or POI to decide how it fits into your specific approval path.

Tech How is my data secured in transit and at rest?

All communication between the app, servers, and dashboards is sent over encrypted connections. We also protect stored data with industry-standard best practices and restrict access internally to people who need it to operate the service.

Tech Who owns the flight data stored in SafeRunway360?

You do. Operators, schools, and pilots retain ownership of their flight data. We store it so we can provide the service (tracking, alerts, analytics) and will never sell your data to third parties.

Tech Can we integrate SafeRunway360 with other systems we use (scheduling, SMS, etc.)?

Integration is a big focus. We plan to support exports and APIs so you can connect SafeRunway360 to tools like scheduling, maintenance, training records, or SMS software. If you have specific systems in mind, reach out—we prioritize based on real-world demand.

Tech Does SafeRunway360 support roles and permissions for different users?

For organizations, yes. We’re building role-based access so admins, pilots, instructors, dispatchers, and safety officers can each see and manage exactly what they need—without over-exposing sensitive data.

Tech Will there be an API, and what could we do with it?

Yes—an API is on the roadmap. Typical uses include pulling flight history, alert logs, runway risk summaries, and utilization stats into your existing dashboards and safety tools, or pushing scheduled flights into SafeRunway360 automatically.

Tech What kind of logs or audit trails are available for safety reviews?

SafeRunway360 keeps a record of key events such as alerts, runway risk changes, and major status changes for flights. This lets safety teams review what happened, when it happened, and what the system was showing at the time.

Tech How often do you update the app and backend?

We ship frequent, incremental improvements instead of rare big changes. Minor updates are made to fix bugs and polish workflows; bigger releases may add new tools (like additional performance calculators or tracking views) based on user feedback.

Pilot Can I use SafeRunway360 with different aircraft types I fly?

Yes. You can create multiple aircraft profiles with different performance presets and weights. Switch profiles before each flight so your tools and runway estimates reflect the aircraft you’re actually flying.

Pilot Can I run SafeRunway360 on more than one device at the same time?

Yes, you can log in on multiple devices. There are no device limits – you can use SafeRunway360 on as many devices as you need. We recommend defining one primary cockpit device for tracking to avoid duplicate positions. Secondary devices (like a phone) can still be useful for checklists or monitoring. You can manage your registered devices in your account settings.

Pilot Does SafeRunway360 support night mode / dark cockpit use?

Yes—dark mode is essentially the default. The interface is designed to be low-glare and cockpit friendly, with careful use of color so important elements stand out without blasting your night vision.

Ops What happens if your servers go down or there’s an outage?

Your core EFB tools on the device will still work locally, but live tracking and dashboards may be affected. We monitor uptime, design for redundancy where possible, and communicate quickly if there’s ever an issue so ops teams know what to expect.

Ops What kind of onboarding support do you provide for new organizations?

For schools and operators we offer guided onboarding: help setting up aircraft, roles, risk templates, and basic workflows. We can also run short training sessions for instructors, dispatchers, and safety teams.

Pilot Can I try SafeRunway360 personally before pitching it to my school or company?

Absolutely. Start as a solo pilot, use it on your own flights, and once you’re comfortable you can invite your CFI, chief pilot, or safety lead to see what it adds. We’re happy to support that conversation.
